One tradition (along with many others, probably) that I didn't mention in my Canada post is that the dessert of choice after our delicious meal of fried fresh fish is an assortment of cookies and fruit. It's a good way to finish the meal and, even after eating all that fish, there's always a little room for a cookie or two. And another nice perk is that we don't usually eat all the cookies for dessert - this means there are lots left for snacking throughout the week!
Leslie went all out in preparation for Canada and took making cookies (and brownies) seriously. She make four different recipes and they all turned out wonderfully. These are our 11th - 14th recipes of the year (that we've published on here, at least). So yay for that too!

These were all very good. Very very good. Leslie did an amazing job with each recipe and they all turned out really well. My favorites were the cake batter cookies - they were moist, sweet, and had sprinkles! They're also nice and light, which was a nice contrast to the brownie bars. The bars were really good too, but there's a lot going on in them. They have good texture from the nuts and cereal, but it's almost too much for me in one bite. The applesauce cookies were a huge hit with everyone on the trip, which was good because the recipe as-is is more like a double recipe. It could easily be halved to make a more manageable batch (instead of the cornucopia of cookies we had... and yes, I love alliteration). They seem like they'd be a great cookie for the fall. I can definitely imagine sitting in the cool autumn breeze with a few of these cookies and a mug of warm cider - that's the magic of a little cinnamon and cloves. And, of course, the cranberry cookies. These were good, but not my favorite. The tartness of the berries made the whole cookie seem a little too savory for me. These cookies, I think, would be better featured in a spread of different desserts (and could easily be the start of a Christmas cookie spread) so the tartness could present a nice contrast to a bunch of other sweeter, richer desserts. I guess we'll have to keep that in mind before the next Christmas party we go to.
