Autumn Adventures

Fall in Indiana is beautiful. Or at least can be. If we actually have one. It seems like the fall season has been short for the last few years - a week or two of mild weather, a torrent of brown leaves hitting the ground, then the cold and gloom of winter. This year, however, we've managed to stretch autumn out quite a bit. So why not take advantage of that?

We started off with a camping trip in early October. Last year we had visited Shades, so we decided to try somewhere else this time and ended up at McCormick's Creek, Indiana's oldest state park. We went with another couple and the four of us had a lot of fun hiking, cooking meals over the fire, and trying to open bottles of wine without a corkscrew. We even took a side trip to Nashville, IN on Sunday to check out the shops and indulge in some Big Woods pizza.

Then, about a month after our McCormick's Creek trip, we headed down to nearly the same area again. We got together with most of my extended family at a cabin in Brown County for a fun family weekend. We did the usual family things - stay up late catching up, play card games, watch football, eat lots of homemade ice cream, and just enjoy being around one another. We were only about 15 mins from Nashville and Big Woods, so we went there again (because yes, it really is that good), and also did a bit of hiking at the State Park. The weather, despite it being a month later than our camping trip, was just barely colder. It made for another great weekend of enjoying the crisp autumn air. And, even though Christmas isn't too far off, it was nice to see everyone.

And that's about it for now. Thanks for reading and have a great Thanksgiving!

Feeling Young, Feeling Old

Leslie and I are, for the most part, fairly... boring. We have steady jobs with normal hours. We come home after those jobs and watch TV, eat dinner, take the dog for a walk... that kind of stuff. Nothing particularly exciting. Well, to spice things up, we recently went to a two concerts and a show, of sorts. A few acts that I like were in the area, so we ventured out to see them.

The first was at the Hi-Fi here in Indianapolis. It's a fun little venue (very little, actually). This made for a very intimate feeling and a great show. The band was Elephant Revival - a more recently discovery for me, but I knew they'd put on a good show. Honestly though, as good as they were I'd almost say they were upstaged by Dead Horses, the opening act. Their bassist was amazingly good and made his Elephant Revival counterpart look like a child playing with a toy instrument. But even so, both acts were great and we had fun. The wildest part of the night for us, however, was that it was all on a weeknight! The show started at 9pm and we left while it was still going at about 11:45. The crowd was interesting as well, with us below the mean age of the group by a number of years. Apparently Elephant Revival mostly pulls in the older crowd, which I wasn't expecting.

So after that experience, of feeling young enough to stay out late on a work night and to identify with the more immature half of the crowd, we had the polar opposite experience at our next concert. This next one was on a Saturday and in Chicago this time, so we made a weekend out of it. We went up on Friday night and checked out a cool new brewery near my parent's rental property (where we typically stay when in the area). Saturday, the day of the show, we slept in, then had pizza (Giordano's, of course) with an aunt and uncle we didn't get a chance to see over Christmas. After visiting with them, we wondered the zoo for a bit, had a pint at a nearby English pub, then went to the show at Lincoln Hall.

Going into this, I knew we would be on the older side. The artist, EDEN, is young himself (not quite 21 years old at time of writing), plus the music style probably draws more of a younger crowd anyway. That said, I still wasn't prepared for what we found. Other than two men/dads, who were there as chaperones, I believe Leslie and I were the oldest ones there. Maybe there were a few others out of college, but it was primarily college kids. Wow. Then, during the whole show, they're all... Snapchatting, I think? I dunno... something with their phones. And the fact that we didn't know was just one more thing to make us feel like old people. That said, the show was quite good. Well, EDEN was good, but the opening act wasn't really my kind of thing. Anyway, after the show was over we headed back to the apartment, but made a quick stop at Portillo's for a bite to eat. Then the next day it was lunch at Smokin M's for some delicious BBQ, then back on the road. It was a fun little trip, and made for an interesting dichotomy when comparing it to the previous week's concert.

Our next show was completely different. This wasn't a band or anything like that... it was a magic dragon. As seen on Fool Us and America's Got Talent, it was Piff the Magic Dragon! He was at Crackers in Indy for a few shows and we couldn't resist. It was a show full of magic, comedy, and, of course, little Mr. Piffles, the World's Only Magic Performing Chihuahua. We had a great time, because how could we not after seeing a magic dragon?

And there you have it - our venture into staying up too late, losing our hearing at loud concerts, and paying too much for drinks at a comedy club. They were all fun experiences and, while we probably won't be doing anything like this again for awhile, we did enjoy ourselves. But don't worry - there are a few other things we've been up to in the queue to post here. So, in the meantime, thanks for reading and we'll see you next time!
