The Cleaned Slate

Our rec room is on its way to becoming pretty awesome. It will soon be a place to watch movies, lounge on comfy furniture, play card games, read books, and sip cold beverages. But making awesome is a process and generally doesn't happen overnight.

As is the case with our room. We started off with a bit of a mess of a space - the drywall was all cracked from the sagging beam issue we corrected before we moved in and we of course had to paint everything. We started the awesome-making-process with drywall repairs. A coworker of mine recommended a company and shared their contact info with me, so I gave them a call. They came out, gave me a quote, and a few weeks later they were in the house getting things fixed! They did a great job patching the walls and ceiling in the rec room, a random spot in the upstairs bathroom, and covering the new beam in the garage. Some of the reasons I didn't tackle this project myself was because a) they did the work for a reasonable price, b) I hate finishing drywall (plus I'm not very good at it), and c) they were able to flawlessly match the ceiling texture that I would probably have butchered pretty badly. Everything looks great and we were so glad to get it done.

The next part of the process is our favorite... painting. We're getting pretty tired of painting and are very glad that we only have a few rooms left now. Luckily, this room was fairly easy. The ceiling was already painted white instead of the light tan / off-white most of the rest of the ceilings were, so we were able to just do one coat instead of the usual two. The walls also were fairly neutral, so we only had to prime over the drywall patches instead of the whole room. We knocked the ceiling out one weekend and then the walls the next weekend. Leslie picked out a nice brown (or tan, I guess?) for the walls and it looks great. It's a good neutral and should go well with everything.

Believe it or not, Ellie and Frank aren't very helpful painters

And that's where I'm going to leave you for now, dear readers. We're now working on getting fun stuff into the room, so our next post will be all about what's going to end up in the space (hopefully... if certain things arrive in the next week...). So, until then, thanks for reading and we'll see you next time!

Slowing Down

My my, it has been awhile. But never fear - we are still alive and well, doing things and going places. It's just that a lot has been going on. We've been busy with work and other activities. You know... stuff.

So we took a break from writing on here for a few weeks. Plus I think I'll pull back a bit on posting. It was getting to be more of a hassle than a joy. I still think the Tuesday/Friday posting schedule I self-enforced was helpful since it prompted us to get things done, but I plan on slowing down to a more relaxed schedule from here on out. Maybe we'll do Wednesdays... those seem like good days. Or maybe we'll do just... whenever we feel like it. We'll play it by ear.

To help with this transition, here's a picture of the cats helping with our latest project.

Thanks for reading and we'll be back with more updates, less frequent as they may be.
